ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017 Press Release

ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2017 is released today by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. ShanghaiRanking began to publish Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by academic subjects since 2009. This release contains rankings of universities in 52 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. In total, more than 4000 universities were ranked.
The NO.1 university ranked in each subject is shown below. Universities from the United States take 32 top positions in 52 subjects, followed by 8 institutions from China (including Hong Kong) and 5 from Netherlands. The best performing institution is Harvard, taking 15 crowns, 7 of which are from Social Sciences subjects and 4 are from Medical Sciences subjects. MIT tops 5 subjects, 4 of which are engineering subjects. Other universities to top more than one subject ranking include Stanford, Berkeley, and University of Pennsylvania from the United States, Oxford from the United Kingdom, Delft University of Technology and University of Wageningen from the Netherlands, and Nanyang Technological University from Singapore.
More than 1400 universities from 80 countries are published in this release and are presented on the league table for a total of 14400 times. Universities from the United States appear 3857 times, followed by Chinese universities (1652 times) and universities from the United Kingdom (1168 times). The Ohio State University – Columbus and the University of New South Wales are presented on the league table of 50 subjects, more than all other universities.

The new subject rankings maintain the use of transparent methodology and third-party data. Ranking indicators include those measures of research productivity, research quality, extent of international collaboration, research with top quality, and the highest academic recognitions. The bibliometric data is from Web of Science and InCites database produced by Clarivate Analytics. Academic award is a featured indicator of ShanghaiRanking’s global rankings. In GRAS 2017, 27 awards identified by scholars from world’s Top 100 universities through Academic Excellence Survey are used, which cover 19 ranked subjects. The Academic Excellence Survey also generates 94 top journals in 33 subjects. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those scholars who complete the survey for their significant contribution on building the criteria of academic excellence.
