The department of neurosurgery of University of Leuven offers the 4-year PhD position in application of L-PRF in neurosurgery. The PhD candidate will be involved in the organization and set-up of a randomized-controlled trial in neurosurgery and skull base surgery where the use of L-PRF will be compared to standard surgical treatment (non-inferiority study). The candidate will be responsible for the implementation of L-PRF in the field of neurosurgery and skull base surgery. The PhD candidate will elaborate options for the (potential) optimization of the use of L-PRF in neurosurgery. The candidate will work in close collaboration with medical specialists in order to validate the technology in an experimental setup and to support/guide its translation towards a clinical setting. Candidates should have ave a MSc degree, be familiar with clinical studies and data management, have experience with building experimental setups, be fluent in oral and written English, be enthusiastic and result-oriented, have high problem-resolving capacities, be a team player and communicate well. The Department of Mechanical Engineering of University of Leuven invites applications for the two PhD positions on energy systems modeling. The positions are available in the context of 2 projects granted under the Belgian Energy Transition Fund: EPOC 2030-2050: Energy technology modelling framework for POlicy support towards a Cost-effective and Sustainable society in 2030 and 2050, and the NEPTUNE: North-sea Energy Plan for Transition to sUstainable wiNd Energy. Candidates should be highlymotivated, enthusiastic and communicative researchers with a Master of Sciencedegree in Engineering or a related field, from a reputable institute, with excellent study results. Candidates should have a strong interest in energy, and especially in energy system operation and planning,renewables integration, energy policy and modeling. Experience with Matlab/Python/GAMS/Julia is a plus. Candidates with a background in a.o.optimization, computer science, operations research are also encouraged to apply. Applicants should also have good English communication skills. The University of Leuven invites applications for the PhD on the development of new highly sensitive sensors. In a first PhD project, you will optimise the properties of the newly discovered material from the basic material properties to the desired sensor specifications. In a second PhD project, you will design new generation sensors based on the new materials. The sensors will be several orders of magnitude more sensitive than the state of the art or will be much smaller allowing a higher integration density. Candidates should be young, highly motivated researchers with a master in physics, material science or engineering who has excelled in his/her studies and who is a team-player with a critical mind. You can work accurately, independently and are willing to learn new techniques. Prior experience in the field of the above-mentioned techniques would be an advantage. You would be eligible to apply for a personal PhD grant (e.g. FWO fellowship). The PhD contract will be for one year and renewable on a year-by-year basis (depending on the results of the intermediate evaluations), up to a total of four years. The OmfsImpath team invites applications for the PhD position on the development of imaging-based bioprinting techniques of tooth and bone regeneration in the dentoalveolar region. The current project aims to address these challenges by developing a dedicated bioprinting technique for dental applications, using an imaging-based design of the restored tissue followed by an optimized printing procedure; optimize 3D printing procedures for the development of biodegradable constructs for cell-free and cell-based applications; evaluate in vitro and in vivo stem cell behavior within the fabricated constructs. Applicants should have a master’s degree in engineering, material engineering, bioscience engineering or equivalent and graduated with distinction. Background in materials science and engineering is a must. Interest in bioprinting technologies and a good knowledge in additive manufacturing processes and cell biology is preferable. In addition, the candidate should have good interpersonal skills and motivation to work in a multidisciplinary research team and should be excellent in English. The Department of Architecture of the University of Leuven invites applications for the PhD fellowship in Intellectual History of Architectural Theory. The fellowship aims to develop an analysis of how the post-war world engaged with the notion of space. To tackle this question the PhD-fellow will focus on the role of émigré intellectuals and architects importing ideas into the post-war American educational context. The fellowship is part of the larger project 'Architectural Space Thought and Taught'. 'Trading Zones of the Concept of Space, 1945-1980', funded by the Research Fund KU Leuven (BOF). The successful applicant will write a PhD-dissertation within the overarching theme of the historical development of spatial aesthetics and architectural theory. The project is chaired by Prof. Rajesh Heynickx, Prof. Stéphane Symons and Prof. Filip Mattens. Successful candidates should have the following qualifications: -The motivation to pursue creative work in the history of spatial aesthetics and architectural theory; -An explicit interest in developing the following research question: how and why was the concept of space set in motion, shaped and modified in the period 1945-1980, the confusing 'interregnum' between modernism and postmodernism?; - A Master (or equivalent) in Architecture, Philosophy, Art History, Intellectual History or Cultural History and academic distinction. Experience with archival research is a plus; -the ability to present research results at international conferences, and to publish in peer reviewed journals; the ability to play an active, collaborative role in the research group Architectural Cultures of the Recent Past, ARP (including its seminars and conferences); -an excellent command of English, proficiency in French and/or German, a willingness to learn Dutch is a plus.
