Awards and achievements. The department receives letters of appreciation for the training of highly qualified engineers from the Union of Composites Manufacturers, Harris Group International Project & Construction, the Middle Neva Shipbuilding Plant, the NPK Composite chemical fiber manufacturer, the Virial production company, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tatarstan as well as certificates and diplomas for participation in various international research and practice conferences and forums.

Teaching staff. Training is provided by four Doctors of Sciences and seven Candidates of Sciences as well as scientists of the Institute of Macromolecular Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMC RAS), specialists of the enterprises such as NPK Composite, the SvetlogorskKhimvolokno fiber manufacturer, the Middle Neva Shipbuilding Plant.

Facilities and resources. The state-of-the-art equipment of the department and academic and research laboratories includes a derivatograph, a laboratory bench for producing composite materials, laboratory extruders, a projection microscope, thermal ovens operating in the air and inert atmosphere, spectrophotometers, and other equipment.

Research. The department conducts basic and applied research in the field of nanostructured polymeric and composite materials.

Strategic partners. ITECH Lyon, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Yuri Gagarin State Technical University of Saratov, Moscow State University of Design and Technology, the Composite World publishing house. Students undertake internships at the top enterprises and organizations of the sector, with further employment opportunities: the Composite holding company, IMC RAS, NPK Composite, the Union of Composites Manufacturers, SvetlogorskKhimvolokno, and others.

International projects and programs. The university participates in interstate programs of Russia and the Republic of Belarus in the field of advanced technologies of fibrous materials and their composites and the program in the field of polymeric materials for medical use funded by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

Competitive advantages. The department is Russia's only department that trains Bachelors, Masters and postgraduate students in the field of carbon fiber materials and carbon-carbon composites. Over the years, the department staff members have made many remarkable inventions such as bioresorbable polymer threads for abdominal surgery, water purification and disinfection method using optical fiber tissue with photocatalytic coating, carbon-carbon composites for the hydrogen economy, innovative carbon thermal protective material, second-to-none next-generation antimicrobial suture material.
