NWSMU named after I.I. Mechnikov is one of the leading medical universities in Russia and Saint Petersburg. The university was founded as a result of the merger of St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education and St. Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I. I. Mechnikov, inheriting the rich history, culture and traditions of the two oldest medical institutions in Russia.

The university has clinical facilities consisting of five clinics and offers a wide range of pre-university training programs, continuing professional education programs, advanced training programs as well as internships, summer and winter schools. The university cooperates with more than 60 foreign universities in 23 countries.

Preparatory department

The Preparatory Department of NWSMU named after I.I. Mechnikov prepares foreign citizens for admission to Bachelor’s and Specialist’s programs as well as residency and PhD programs taught in Russian. Attendees study the language at a high level and take natural sciences courses.

Mode of study: full-time

Groups: up to 10 people

Duration: November 1 - August 31

  • Russian language course that develops the capacity and readiness for written and oral communication in Russian
  • Courses in some subjects (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Mathematics) necessary for studying at a Russian medical university

General Medicine / General Medicine in English

There are state-funded and quota places for the General Medicine program taught in Russian.

Students specializing in General Medicine are trained in accordance with the Federal State Educational Standard. The high quality of university training is ensured by highly qualified teachers, including around 120 Professors and 160 Associate Professors. Training is provided at the university’s clinical facilities and at major municipal polyclinics and in-patient clinics in Saint Petersburg. Simulation training, scenario-based learning, and problem-based learning are widely used.
