Teaching staff. The department employs top-class specialists (in the field of research and production and in the field of teaching) who are graduates of the department of Moscow Institute of Petrochemical and Gas Industry named after Ivan Gubkin and graduates of IUT (Tyumen State Oil and Gas University, Industrial Institute of Tyumen). Training is provided by 30 teachers including nine Doctors of Sciences and 13 Candidates of Sciences. Many teachers were directly involved in the discovery of the oil and gas complex of West Siberia. Most of them have government awards for the development of the West-Siberian oil complex.

Facilities and resources. The department has specialized learning laboratories for computer-assisted processing of geology and geophysics data, which allows teachers to use new teaching forms, methods and aids. Students use state-of-the-art program packages (Word, Excel, Corel Draw), specialized (Matcad, Matlab, Maple, Work Bench) and professional ones (GEOSEARCH, Prime, Solver, Techlog, SIAL, SCANDIG, DLS, PLEX, Camertone).

Research. The teachers participate in annual international conferences "Geology and Oil and Gas Occurrence in the West-SiberianMegabasin," "State-of-the-Art Technologies of Oil and Gas Geophysics," EAGO, EAGE, etc.

As part of annual autumn and spring sessions of the Student Academy of Sciences (science and technology conferences) up to 10 reports can be presented. Students actively participate in science and technology conferences. They also rather successfully participate in universitywide olympiads, international and all-Russian conferences (Moscow, Sevastopol, Tomsk).

Education. The university uses multimedia equipment. Multimedia lectures are delivered and practical and laboratory works are done using software such as Geovotion, Petrel, Rocsar. The department invites leading specialists from geological and geophysical companies and enterprises as well as oil and gas production companies and subdivisions of Western geophysical surveying companies such as Shlumberger, Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Weatherford, etc.

Strategic partners. The university cooperates with oil and gas companies such as Gazprom, Surgutneftegaz, NK Rosneft, LUKOIL-West Siberia, the Tyumen Oil Research Center, the Siberian Research and Analysis Center, the West Siberian Geological Research and Analysis Center, V.I. ShpilmanResearchCenter for Sustainable Mining, the Tyumenneftegaz research and development center, the Purgeofizika service geophysical enterprise as well as international companies such as Schlumberger, Roxar, Landmark, СGG, Repsol, etc.
