Vancouver Island University offers the English Language & Culture Program (ELCP) that combines high quality English language instruction with a focus on developing listening and speaking skills. To complement the language learning in the classroom, students also gain understanding of the culture in Canada and on Vancouver Island through the recreational activities and daytrips, which are part of the Summer & Winter programming. ELCP Program Features: 4 start dates – July, August, mid-January or February; 3 levels of English instruction – developing, intermediate, or advanced; 20 hours of English language instruction per week; Integrated skills development in reading, writing, listening, and speaking; small classes with highly qualified, friendly, and approachable teachers; language labs and a wide variety of learning materials; social and cultural activities and group day trips; optional regional tours to explore Canada’s west coast; farewell social and certificate of completion. This program is designed for students to practice and extend their ability to communicate in English effectively and fluently. Students must have basic English skills before entering the English Language Centre (ELC) programs. The ELC cannot accept students who are at the very beginning level of using English. Students will be given an English language level assessment test when they arrive at Vancouver Island University to confirm their basic English knowledge. If a student does not pass the level assessment test, the student may not be accepted into the program. Vancouver Island University offers a number of scholarships for new international students at the undergraduate level. Students are considered for scholarships at the time of admission, based on their submitted transcripts and application supporting documents. The standard deadline for admission to most VIU programs is March 31st, and scholarship selections are determined 6 weeks after this closing date. A separate application for scholarships is not required, as students will be automatically considered if they meet the scholarship criteria. 1. VIU World-Wide Entrance Scholarships are provided to exceptional new long-term academic undergraduate student applicants (not one semester Education Abroad or Exchange students). They are awarded to up to 20 of the top applicants entering in the Fall semester based on entering grades from submitted transcripts. No application necessary. 2. British Columbia High School International Excellence Entrance Scholarship is provided to all International student applicants who have applied to attend VIU in their graduating year from a British Columbia High School with a Dogwood Certificate. Highest average in combined marks of English 12 (combined provincial and school mark), social Studies 11 and Math 11 (Principles or applications). Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary. 3. VIU International Undergraduate Regional Scholarships are awarded to International students applying for entry into the first year of an undergraduate academic program. The award is based upon the entered grades from submitted High School transcripts. No application is necessary. 4. British Columbia Offshore School Entrance Scholarship is awarded to all international student graduates from BC Offshore schools as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary.
