Structure
Under the guidance of scientists, the university successfully develops 14 scientific schools, seven of which are listed on the register of leading scientific schools in Russia.
Many years of research and academic work have allowed the university to create eight museums exhibiting excellent visual aids for extending and consolidating students’ theoretical knowledge.
The museums present the anatomical material, from the biggest to the smallest fauna species. One of the eight museums, the Anatomic Pathology Museum, is one of the leading museums in the world and is under protection of UNESCO.
The structural subdivisions of the university include the fundamental library with the collections comprising 234,000 items.
Students acquire their practical professional skills at university clinics such as surgery, therapeutics, obstetrics, gynecology clinics.
Preparatory department
It is intended for foreign citizens who do not speak Russian or have a poor command of it.
Admission requirements:
- complete secondary general education confirmed by the corresponding document (certificate, diploma)
- the desire to learn Russian
- the desire to pursue a Russian-taught degree program at SPSUVM in the future
Students pursue supplementary educational programs in Medicine and Biology:

The department offers only full-time studies. Students are accommodated in the dormitory during the period of study.

Specialist’s and Master’s programs
Veterinary Medicine
Today Saint Petersburg State University of Veterinary Medicine carries out its historic mission to train veterinarians for almost all regions of Russia and for other countries. In Northwest Russia, the university is a leading educational institution to train veterinarians.
Around 3,000 students are studying at the faculty.
Modes of study
- in Specialist’s programs: full-time – 5 years, part-time – 5.5 years, extramural – 6 years

Bachelor’s and Master’s programs
Biology
Saint Petersburg State University of Veterinary Medicine launched the Bioecology program in July 2010. Graduates study and assess the state of animal and plant components of ecosystems and biosphere, protect these sites, develop regulatory documents, do field work and laboratory research.

Veterinary and Sanitary Inspection
The program has been training specialists in veterinary inspection, organization and management of veterinary activities since 2003. It is these specialists who are responsible for safety and quality of products of animal and plant origin.

Aquatic Biological Resources and Aquaculture
The first students were enrolled in 2010. The subjects of graduates’ professional activities in the future are ecosystems of natural and artificial water reservoirs, technological processes of artificial reproduction and cultivation of hydrobionts, equipment for aquaculture enterprises.

Science
The university research is coordinated by the scientific department which comprises the research diagnostic and treatment innovation center.
The center comprises the small domestic animals clinic. It conducts research, tests modern methods, develops cutting-edge areas in veterinary medicine.
The center also comprises the laboratories, including the laboratory for studying brucellosis, tuberculosis and campylobacteriosis, the laboratory for studying protozoiases, and the clinical biochemistry laboratory.
Saint Petersburg State University of Veterinary Medicine is a member of the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE).
European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education is Europe’s largest non-governmental association of higher institutions for veterinary medicine that coordinates the work and compliance with the veterinary education standards in Europe.
Adaptation
Student life is not only about studies. The university has the active Student Council and the trade union committee that organize, in cooperation with the university administration, extracurricular activities for students, including tours, visits to theaters to see well-known performances and visits to the most interesting museums in Saint Petersburg, and other activities.
The university students take an active part in sports, choreography, theater and music competitions.
All students from other cities are accommodated in the dormitory.
