Achievements and awards. In 2013 the program was ranked among  the Best Educational Programs of Innovative Russia. In 2018 it underwent professional-public accreditation and obtained the certificate issued by the Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education and Career Development.

Students of the department annually participate and win prizes in sectoral olympiads and conferences, are actively engaged in research, win regional and all-Russian research grants.

Teaching staff. Training is provided in the following majors: Electric Power Supply; Electric Drive and Automation by the highly qualified teaching staff including three Doctors of Sciences and nine Candidates of Sciences. The teachers constantly improve their qualification undertaking work placement at oil and gas industry enterprises,  power grid operators and specialized educational institutions. The highly qualified specialists of power grid enterprises and design organizations are also engaged in the teaching process.

For joint research two specialized departments were established: at the Tyumenenergo grid distribution company, the branch of Rosseti, an operator of energy grids in Russia, and at Siberian-Urals Energy Company.

Facilities and resources. The department has all the necessary facilities and resources for all kinds of laboratory and practical classes and students' research work. The Department of Electric Power Industry has 11 specialized laboratories with state-of-the-art benches and equipment. Besides, some classes are given at the specialized departments using unique equipment from industrial partners.

Research. Research at the department is very well organized and is a priority area of its activity. It is accompanied by a great number of publications in peer-reviewed journals, in particular, those included in Scopus and Web of Science, and patents. The department annually holds the international scientific and practical conference of young scientists and specialists "Energy Saving and Innovative Technologies in the Fuel and Energy Sector."

Strategic partners. The university has concluded cooperation agreements with Siberian-Urals Energy Company, the Tyumenenergo grid distribution company, the Federal Grid Company of the Unified Energy System of Russia, the Giprotyumenneftegaz oil and gas company, LUKOIL, the Surgutneftegaz oil and gas company, the Fortum energy company, the NK Rosneft oil company, Gazprom, and others.

International projects and programs. Since 2017 students of the department have been participating in the Case-In international case championship.
