Licensing and state accreditation

The university carries out its academic activities in accordance with the license, issued by the Federal Agency for Supervision in Education and Science, of July 28, 2014, registration № Л035-00115 70/00096945, valid indefinitely, and state accreditation, issued by the Federal Agency for Supervision in Education and Science, of May 29, 2017, registration № А007-00115-70/01052072, valid indefinitely.

Internal system of education quality evaluation

  • interim assessment by disciplines (modules) following the results of internships and term papers and projects and participation in project activities;

  • analysis of the portfolio of academic and non-academic achievements;

  • Olympiads and other competitions on particular disciplines (modules);

  • final state assessment.

Professional-public, joint, and international accreditation

8 degree programs of TSU underwent professional-public accreditation; 44 degree programs, including 29 joint programs, underwent international accreditation. Joint accreditation is carried out by the National Center for Public Accreditation, Russia and the Education Quality Evaluation Agency, Ministry of Education, P.R. China. 29 programs are included in DAQAR. 17 programs with valid accreditation are included in ENAEE with the EUR-ACE label awarded to engineering degree programs.

Reputation background

  • TSU is the first university in Asian Russia that is ranked among the Top 4 Russian universities in the RUR world ranking.
  • TSU participates in the pilot project to reform higher education in the Russian Federation. Its experience will be extended to all Russian universities.
  • TSU initiates and consolidates the activities of the consortium of academic and research organizations of the Big University of Tomsk (BUT). Students and specialists can benefit from the resources of all BUT members such as research libraries, museums, laboratories, educational programs, etc.

University today

TSU is a classical university consisting of faculties and institutes for natural sciences, engineering, and humanities.

Research is conducted at world-class research institutes and scientific laboratories where students work alongside with Russian and foreign specialists.

TSU is a co-founder of the Consortium of Russian Universities “Ambassadors of Russian Higher Education and Science” for expanding and attracting new educational markets in Asia. It is ranked among the Top 15 Russian universities that will train highly qualified personnel for China alongside with Chinese universities.

With the “Eastern vector” being strengthened now, the university has concluded 308 agreements with Asian universities and conducts science and technology missions to Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, and other countries.

Specialization

TSU is a classical research university that integrates the learning process with research and development of innovations in a wide range of disciplines – physics and mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

People

5,700 staff members, over 2,700 teachers, including around 2000 Professors and Associate Professors. At different times, the university employed 6 Nobel Prize winners – Ivan Pavlov, Zhores Alferov, Harald zur Hausen, and others. Today, TSU has 17, 000 students, including more than 3,700 international students from 67 countries. TSU has communities from China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Laos which are among the largest ones in Russia.

University structure

  • The university comprises 21 faculties and one educational institute, 3 research institutes, 66 world-class laboratories, the Research library, and the Siberian Botanical Garden.
  • The university also comprises the SKIF Cyberia Supercomputer Center, one of Russia’s largest testing grounds for unmanned aircraft systems, the world-class scientific center for safety technologies, the Artificial Intelligence Research Center, and many others.

Facilities and resources

23 educational buildings, 10 dormitories, the Culture Center, the Sports House with a swimming pool and sports halls, a stadium, Research library (more than 4 million items), the Siberian Botanical Garden, and 10 museums.

Research

TSU develops its scientific potential to strengthen Russia’s technological leadership and takes an active part in megascience projects.

TSU scientists conduct research in more than 100 advanced and popular fields in areas such as New Materials and Chemistry, Engineering Biology, Socio-Humanistic Engineering, Security Technologies, Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Microelectronics, Artificial Intelligence, etc.

Research findings are published in journals with a high citation rate. TSU publishes 21 scientific journals included in the Web of Science and Scopus databases.

PROSPECTS

Vision of the future of the university in the global education space 

The overall structure of the TSU’s development program for the period until 2030 is based on four frameworks corresponding to four strategic goals. These are a breakthrough university, an ecosystem university, technological leadership, and advanced people.

The university sets itself two goals. The global goal is to develop an education export center in Siberia uniting the best regional universities around itself. For this purpose, the region fits a lot of parameters such as high territorial potential, weather conditions, and unique infrastructure meeting all the needs of students and guests of the city of Tomsk that is truly meant for students.

The local goal is to create a model of a sustainable university, strengthen positions in international rankings, and develop TSU as the leading university exporting education.

The university has established long-term cooperation with 223 educational organizations, enterprises, and research institutes.
