Current position in rankings.  The university is ranked 22nd in the Ranking of Higher Education Institutions of the Vladimir Potanin Foundation, 56th in the Expert RA Agency Ranking, and 62th in the Ranking of Demand for Engineering Higher Education Institutions.

Achievements and awards. Students annually participate in international conferences on permafrost, in the Lomonosov Universiade in Geology (LomonosovMoscowStateUniversity), the Lomonosov international scientific conference of students, postgraduate students, and young scientists. They often win prizes and are invited to pursue a Master’s degree at LomonosovMoscowStateUniversity.

Teaching staff. The teaching staff includes nine Candidates of Sciences and three Professors. The department is headed by Academician V.P. Melnikov, an outstanding internationally recognized scientist in the field of permafrost studies, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy of Science of Belgium, a laureate of the Russian Federation Government Award in Science and Technology. 

Research. The department conducts research on and carries out design of frozen grounds for the construction of buildings and facilities and the Arctic Region.

Education. The program is implemented in the format of practical and modular training. Practical and laboratory classes are given at the GP Promneftegazekologia engineering research company, Tyumen Research and Design Institute of Oil and Gas, the Neftegazproekt oil and gas research and design institute.

Strategic partners. The department has high scientific potential. It closely cooperates with the Earth Cryosphere Institute and Melnikov Permafrost Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, construction companies (Fundamentstroyarkos, Fundament-Proekt), the SibGEO land surveying company, gas production companies (Gazprom dobycha Nadym, Gazprom dobycha Yamburg, VNIPIgasdobycha), Tyumen Research and Design Institute of Natural Gases, the Production and Research Institute for Engineering Surveys in Construction, etc. The employers are Schlumberger, Gazprom, LUKOIL-West Siberia, Pokachevneftegaz, GP Promneftegazekologia, Fundamentstroyarkos, Tyumen Research and Design Institute of Oil and Gas, Tyumen Research and Design Institute of Natural Gases, Giprotyumenneftegaz, Surgutneftegaz, VNIPIgasdobycha (Saratov); VNIPIgasdobycha (Nadym); the Earth Cryosphere Institute, the LUKOIL-Engineering company (Tyumen), the TyumenOilResearchCenter.

International projects and programs. The institute is developing several projects as part of environmental and geocryological research on the territory of the NumtoNaturalPark.

Competitive advantages. The department trains Bachelors (in one major) that meet the requirements of several professional standards.
