Russian as a foreign language

When studying Russian, students from African countries face some difficulties:

  • Pronunciation. Unusual intonation and stress, articulation and pronunciation of sounds “y”, “e”, “zh”, “sh”, ”ch” can become a considerable challenge
  • Grammar. Cases, declension and agreement, verb tenses and conjugation can be difficult to understand and use
  • Cross-cultural differences. The differences in culture and customs between African countries and Russia can cause some difficulties in understanding the meanings of words and expressions

Tips to overcome difficulties in learning Russian:

  1. Communicate in Russian with native speakers or other students to improve your communication skills
  2. Listen to Russian music, watch movies, read books, articles and news in Russian, listen to audio books or podcasts to expand your vocabulary and improve your understanding of the language
  3. Practice Russian in everyday situations
  4. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You will be understood!
