Letter А, а [а]

The first article, "33 Steps Across Russia," contains the key to the very beginning—the very first letter of the Russian alphabet, a universal sound understood by people in every corner of the world: A!

Origin of the name

The letter A in the Russian alphabet originates from the Greek "alpha," which came from the Phoenician symbol "aleph," coming from the Egyptian hieroglyph for "bull." In Slavic writing, it was called "az" (which meant "I") and always stood first in the alphabet.

Guide word

This word, which starts with the letter under study, is a step word on your educational path. The capital letter A immediately evokes associations with the academy—a word full of grandeur and knowledge.

Академия (Akademiya/Academy)

It is both a prestigious educational institution of your dream and a powerful scientific center where world-class discoveries are born.

In Russia, for example, we have:

The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) — Russia's main scientific center that unites leading scientists and researchers.

The Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture the custodian of the traditions of Russian fine art.

The word "academy" has an ancient soul and a rich history. Once upon a time, there lived a hero named Academus (Akademos), whose good deed—helping his brothers save their sister—was forever remembered. As a sign of respect, he was buried in a sacred olive grove. Centuries later, the shady alleys in this place witnessed wise conversations: it was here that the Greek philosopher Plato gathered his students. The sacred grove, full of silence and meaning, was named "Academy."

That’s how the word beginning with the letter A has passed through the centuries, becoming a symbol of knowledge, science, and enlightenment.

When we pronounce the word "academy," we sense its special aura—it is a symbol of prestige, intelligence, and scientific elite. Institutions with this status are built on a solid scientific foundation and train top-notch specialists.

The Academy is about bold experiments, in-depth theoretical training, and fundamental research. It is a contribution to the treasury of human knowledge, to the intellectual wealth of our planet.

This word preserves the memory of Plato and the Academy, of the reforms of Peter the Great, and, of course, of the outstanding achievements of Russian science.

It reminds us that nothing is impossible! Work tirelessly, expand your knowledge day by day, and you can become a scientist, a true academician one day. Perhaps it is you who will make a great discovery, and your dissertation will become a scientific breakthrough that will change the world.

Fact

February 8, 1724 is the day when the Senate published Peter the Great's decree on the establishment of the Academy in the Russian Empire. It is the foundation date of the academy. The founder is Peter the Great.
