The abundance of rankings and ratings of all kinds can disorientate and perplex you even more if you are still choosing a university / field of study/educational program. And it’s not just about the abundance. It is also about the methodological aspects of a particular study. Let’s try to gain insight into what exactly the compilers think using the RAEX education rankings as an example.
The Three Missions International Ranking, 2022
This ranking list consists of more than 2,000 universities from 129 countries. The number of universities from each country was determined in proportion to its contribution to the global economy. So, Russia turned out to be represented by 146 universities, including the explicit leaders of Russian higher education with rich history, traditions and achievements.
The Three Missions Ranking compilers evaluated the universities using three groups of criteria:
- Education. Student academic success, the number of international students, human and financial resources.
- Science. The university’s scientific achievements, the quality of scientific publications as well as staff members’ engagement in research.
- Society. The university’s contribution to availability of online education, transparency.

Regional/local rankings
One of the criteria for Russia’s attractiveness to international students is its geographical and natural diversity. If your dream is to see the aurora borealis, study on the shore of Baikal or the Pacific Ocean, study real mammoths, the regional ranking will come in handy. For example, as part of the study, the RAEX local ranking compilers studied most universities by federal districts. Moreover, emphasis was placed on the quality of personnel training and the role of a university as a regional driver.
For example, the local ranking of the Southern Federal District universities shows a picture which differs from the international and subject rankings.

But the essential point to remember is that they exclude the leading universities included in the international ranking. For example, the given ranking does not include one of the Russian higher education leaders – Southern Federal University
