St. Petersburg State University, in partnership with the My History Foundation for the Support of the Humanities and with backing from the Russian Ministry of Education, has hosted a festival of Russian education and culture in Cape Town. SPbU experts delivered public lectures, outlined admissions procedures for the University, and introduced attendees to Russia’s academic, cultural, and educational opportunities. The event drew over 300 residents and visitors to the Republic of South Africa.
As Andrei Lesin, Director of the SPbU Centre for Language Testing, observed, events of such scale represent a unique opportunity not only for sharing expertise but also for gaining deeper insight into a country’s culture and for fostering warm relations between people.
Any collaboration grows stronger when the parties are aware of each other’s cultural nuances and possess some knowledge of the partner country’s language and history. Indeed, festivals such as these allow us to introduce residents of different countries to Russian traditions and history, to present our unique experience in delivering educational projects and, of course, to teach the Russian language. The festival programme in South Africa is extensive: lectures, screenings of Russian cinema, a photo exhibition of reproductions of celebrated paintings, a karaoke night with Russian songs, a piano concert and much more.
