Achievements and awards.  The department was awarded the Gold Department of Russia diploma (the series "Golden Fund of Russian Science") for the contribution to the development of Russian education. It has the professional-public accreditation certificate (ПОА-035 of December 11, 2014) issued by the Council for Accreditation "OPORA RUSSIA."

Teaching staff. Training is provided by the highly qualified teaching staff including four Doctors of Sciences, Professors, 28 Candidates of Sciences, Associate Professors. The academic degree holders rate is 80%. The employees of the Institute of Geoinformation Systems, the Tyumen Pribor automation company, the Sibnefteavtomatika flow-metering equipment manufacturer, the Institute of the Problems of Northern Development of the Siberian Branch of the RussianAcademy of Sciences are engaged in the teaching process.

Facilities and resources. There are eight laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, two simulation laboratories using controllers, computers with uploaded specialized software, a number of computer classrooms and lecture halls with multimedia equipment: National Instruments PXI training and research facility (production well simulator); Metso DNA training and laboratory facility, a hardware and software platform based on logic controllers and process I/O modules used to study automated functions of SCADA systems; Motorola Moscad training and laboratory facility; Festo MPS 203 IT training and laboratory facility; Festo TP802 training kit of elements; Dell T3500 Workstation; Siemens Simatic S7-300 training and laboratory facility. All disciplines are fully supported with software products.

Research. The main research areas include the following: methods, models and technologies of intelligent systems with case-based reasoning; monitoring of oil and gas facilities using fuzzy systems; application of moire fringe method to study surface topology; electric power production techniques.

Education. The classes are given in classrooms and laboratories of the department. Practical and modular training is provided at the partner enterprises (Sibnefteavtomatika, Tyumen Pribor), open lectures are delivered by the organizations’ representatives.

Strategic partners. The university cooperates with enterprises such as Festo (Germany), National Instruments (USA), Valmet Automation (Finland), the Transneft Siberia oil transportation company, the Tyumen Pribor automation company, the ASU Tehnologia design and installation company, the Vira Realtime automation company, Tyumen Petroleum Research Center, GMS Neftemash, an oil equipment supplier.

International projects and programs. The university implements the student internship program in cooperation with Valmet Automation.
