Volgograd – a hero city with a glorious and difficult fate – is located in the southeast of European Russia. The city history dates back to 1589 – the time of foundation of the permanent observation fortress Tsaritsyn. In 1925, Tsaritsyn was renamed Stalingrad. During the Second World War, it became the place of one of the bloodiest battles in the history of mankind. The outcome of the Battle of Stalingrad determined the war outcome to a great extent. In 1961, the city was renamed Volgograd.

Today Volgograd is a major industrial, educational and scientific center that stretches for 100 kilometers as a narrow strip along the Volga River bank. More than 20 universities and branches in the city train specialists in higher education and postgraduate education. 57,000 students are studying at the Volgograd universities.

The city boasts numerous historical sites related to the events of the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War. A great number of sights attract thousands of tourists every year.

Mamayev Kurgan

It is the memorial complex located at the 102.0 meter hill where the cruelest battles were fought for control of Stalingrad. Ascension to the memorial alleys, near the monuments and landmarks leaves a lasting impression in every visitor’s heart.

The Motherland Calls

The immense monument at the top of the Mamayev Kurgan is so extraordinary and moving that it inevitably attracts all eyes. Making a 85-meter sculpture became a challenging engineering task. It is the first monument completely made from reinforced concrete. The sword in the statue’s hands was made from steel using the aviation technology.

The Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum

The museum complex was built in the historical place where the 13th guards rifle division of Major General A. I. Rodimtsev landed in September 1942. The museum halls and depository are located at the two levels of the complex. The permanent exhibition of military equipment items is located in the central square of the museum.
