Awards and achievements. Prizes in WorldSkills Russia championships in FutureSkills competencies in the Quantum Technology category. Grants for participation in European and American conferences and research grants.
Teaching staff has unique knowledge and skills in the field of laser technology and related areas such as optical fiber technology, acoustooptics and acoustoelectronics, optical data processing, spectroscopy. Over 80% of teachers have academic degrees and scientific expertise related to the program.
Facilities and resources. The department has nine learning and four learning and research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment and devices. There are unique research laboratories: Photonics, Laser Technology, Acoustooptical Data Processing.
Research. Areas: methods of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy LIBS; contactless optical spectroscopy; optical methods for fire detection; laser and optical methods for control of physical and technological processes.
Education. Practice-oriented training for students with their engagement in research projects in promising research areas. There is a scientific school of acoustooptics and acoustoelectronics which is renowned in Russia and abroad, a student scientific group of optics and radio optics, student chapters of international scientific communities SPIE and OSA.
Strategic partners. SUAI is a member of the Laser Association, and the department's leading professors are its honorary members. Strategic partners: top laser and optics firms and enterprises in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and the world such as Avangard, Leningrad Laser Systems, Vavilov State Optical Institute, the IMPULSE research and production association, Research Institute of Precision Mechanics, the Precision Instrument Making Systems research and production company, Proel.
International projects and programs. Every year students participate in the international research conference "Wave Electronics and Infocommunication Systems" held by SUAI, as well as in top international conferences such as SPIE Optics+Photonics, SPIE Optics+Optoelectronics, OSA Frontiers in Optics.
