Tais Craveiro, Brazil. SUSU PhD student

Tais Craveiro, Brazil. SUSU PhD student

A year ago, I entered the SUSU Foundation Program to learn Russian and embark on a PhD program later. Before that moment, I had already earned my Bachelor’s degree in History and studied cinema as part of my Master’s program. At that time, I took an interest in the art of non-Western countries, and I studied the cinema of the Soviet Union and China.

I’ve had experience of studying abroad already. Fourteen years ago, I started studying Chinese and went to China. I am sure that understanding the culture and cultural immersion is impossible without knowing the language.

My wish to pursue a PhD degree in Russia was not spontaneous. I knew that there were excellent universities here. SUSU is one of the best universities. That’s how I found myself in the Ural region.

In Brazil, I learned a little Russian, and this helped me a lot. Basic knowledge of the language and love of Russian culture, history, literature, cinema, and ballet – all of this helped me enjoy my learning process. Russian is a very beautiful and interesting language, but it is very difficult, and you should study it intensely. Besides having classes, we went to museums and theaters, and this was very helpful. Of course, I still have some difficulty studying the language, that’s why I keep practicing every day. Besides, I always get help from my Russian colleagues at the university and other people.

I adapted to the climate and people very quickly. In my first winter in Russia, I walked a great deal because Russian winter is very beautiful. Snow is everywhere, the forest is snowy, and the city is snowy! I am not afraid of the cold. Winter is a great season if you are dressed properly.

I’ve been to Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Pushkin, Vyborg, and Ekaterinburg. These are very beautiful and interesting cities where I managed to learn a lot of new things about Russian history and get acquainted with very nice people.

I can say that studying at a Russian university is a great life experience and that Russia has become my second home!
