Teaching staff. The department employs 14 teachers, including one Professor, Doctor of Engineering Sciences, ten Associate Professors, and two Senior Teachers, Candidates of Engineering Sciences. Industry representatives, heads, and leading specialists of footwear and fancy leather enterprises of Saint Petersburg are also engaged in the teaching process.
Research. Starting from the third year, students get involved in research activities, become co-authors of articles and inventions, win prizes at university and republican student conferences, exhibitions of creative works.
The promising research areas are two- and three-dimensional footwear modeling, prototyping of accessories and footwear models, high-precision anthropometric measurements of footwear and glove consumers' feet and hands.
Education. The department has the Innovation Center, where students master two- and three-dimensional computer modeling methods and apply them in production processes. They also master new techniques for decorating leather materials and prototyping footwear models and accessories (3D printing of designs of heels, soles, footwear models, and accessories for leather products). There are laboratories equipped with modern computers and measurement devices.
Competitive advantages. Over 57 years of the department's existence, teachers and staff members have published more than 25 textbooks and monographs, obtained more than 150 certificates of authorship and patents for inventions, developed novel equipment and state-of-the-art technologies and introduced them into the industry. Students and graduates constantly participate in creative contests, conferences, exhibitions such as Admiralty Needle, Shoes-Style, Fashion Industry, Import Substitution in Light Industry.
For several years the department organized the Leather Products Design Olympiad and the Podium of Success creative contest so that creative young people could communicate with the employers to promote authors and their ideas.
Teachers give their original courses on designing footwear and fancy leather goods of various structures and advanced training courses for industry representatives.
