Programme presentation. The study programme Bioengineering and Bioinformatics is aimed at training specialists possessing advanced competencies in the field of biomedicine, biotechnologies, and biopharmaceutics. The students are trained to work in various sectors of economy, including medicine, pharmaceutics, agriculture, industrial biotechnologies. The main attention is paid to the ability to develop and control complex science intensive projects.
Within the academic process, diverse biological objects are studied: modified natural and artificial organisms starting with viruses and unicellular organisms to biomacromolecules and genetic engineering objects. The students work with databases describing the structure and properties of biological objects (genomes, proteins, nucleic acids, bioorganic compounds and their interactions).
During the course of studies and research work, the resources of various laboratories and centres are used: the laboratories of immunology and cellular biotechnologies, genomics, proteomics, microbiology and biotechnologies, the centre of medical biotechnologies of Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, the laboratories of P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Atlantic Branch), AtlantNIRO, Regional Diagnostics Centre, Regional Hospital, City Hospital, Hygiene and Epidemiology Centre in Kaliningrad Region, Rospotrebnadzor and Rosselkhoznadzor.
Teaching staff. The academic process is carried out by highly-qualified teachers. Over 70% of the teachers have academic degrees and titles, including 10% of Doctors of Sciences. The Institute is headed by Candidate of Biological Sciences M.V. Patrushev.
Competitiveness of students. For high-quality work experience, the students are placed at the laboratories of Hi-Tech Park of the University and biological station of P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology.
The applicants’ Unified State Examination grade point average over the last three years is 65.
Interaction with employers. The graduates of the programme are in demand in the institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, in branch biological, medical, pharmaceutical institutes, in educational institutions, state-owned and private pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies.
