Programme presentation. Laser systems and technologies are widely used in different spheres of human life: from home appliances, pictorial holography, medicine and show business to metallurgical engineering, thermonuclear fusion, aviation and cosmonautics. Specialists of this area are in high demand in different enterprises throughout Russia as well as abroad.

Teaching staff. The teaching staff of the graduate Department of Laser Systems includes 13 Candidates of Sciences, 9 Doctors of Sciences and an Academician of the Siberian Branch of the RussianAcademy of Science (SB RAS). They are current researchers, managers of research groups, departments in the institutes of SB RAS and manufacturing companies of Novosibirsk. The development of major educational programmes is carried out with the direct involvement and control by these leading scientists who represent at the same time potential employers.

The department is a manager of international schools for young scientists in laser physics. Teachers regularly conduct onsite consultations for foreign students. Postgraduates and members of the department are participants of the Joint Programme “Mikhail Lomonosov” of The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Competitiveness of students. Third year students have work experience in the Institutes of SB RAS and enterprises; they write term papers and graduation thesis on the topics suggested by relevant enterprises and laboratories. Thus, they gain not only necessary knowledge and skills but also participate in the main research areas of the institutes’ activity.

Interaction with employers. The potential employers a wide range of opportunities for work experience and internships. Students have a possibility to get to know the organization’s activities before they decide on the place for work experience or internship.

Generally, graduates of this course are in demand in enterprises and companies in material development, operation and maintenance based on the use of lasers and optoelectronic equipment, laser systems and technologies. There is a high demand for young specialists in research institutes and enterprises of SB RAS as well as in experimental design offices and organizations of small and medium enterprises.
