Head of the Department, Professor M.Iu. Okhtilev is the founder of the scientific school for laying the groundwork for solving the tasks of structural and functional synthesis of intelligent information technologies, a laureate of the Russian Government Award. The teaching staff includes Professor, a laureate of the Russian Government Award, Professor B. Sokolov, one of the authors of the theory of proactive control of complex technical objects, Professor Iu. Skobtsov, a specialist in evolutionary computations. Heads and leading specialists of the real sector of the economy related to software engineering are engaged in the teaching process. Their rate is 28% of the department’s teaching staff.

Facilities and resources. The degree-granting department has three classrooms fitted with state-of-the-art computer equipment and multimedia equipment, a specialized educational laboratory of embedded systems.

Education. Bachelor students pursue full-time and extramural studies focusing on software design. The Master’s program offers only full-time studies and focuses on methods for designing artificial intelligence systems for various purposes.

Research. As part of the degree-granting department’s research areas, the university conducts contract-based R&D to design software for space object monitoring systems under the agreements with Roscosmos (the Russian Federal Space Agency), and the RFBR projects are implemented. The research findings are regularly published in monographs and leading scientific journals.

Competitive advantages. The programs focus on software design technologies using a modern software engineering methodology, which facilitates graduates’ adaptation to working at various enterprises. The effectiveness of this approach is confirmed by the analysis of the performance of graduates holding senior positions at major companies focusing on the industrial development of software.

Employers and employment. Almost all graduates find jobs in their degree field at the top enterprises of Roscosmos and other major IT companies in Saint Petersburg.
