Programme presentation. Opera and Symphonic Conducting Department of the faculty of Conducting of Russian Gnessin’s Academy of Music implements basic master’s study programme of training opera and symphonic conductors. The main objectives of the Programme is to train elite musicians-conductors, art directors of creative groups of cultural and art institutions, and pedagogical personnel for secondary and higher educational institutions. Graduates of the Programme are trained in directing symphonic, chamber and opera and symphonic orchestras. They are also prepared for concert performance, musical and theatrical, and teaching activity.

The sphere of professional activity of graduates includes symphonic and chamber orchestras, musical theatres, concert organizations (philharmonics), musical educational institutions of any level (mainly secondary professional and higher education institutions), institutions of general education and culture of different types, creative unions and associations, culture authorities.

Teaching staff. High quality of training is assured by skilled teaching staff, which includes three professors, two assistant-professors, a People’s Artist of the USSR, an Honored Artist of Russia, an Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation, two laureates of state prizes of the Russian Federation, three laureates of national and international competitions. The Academy’s chamber orchestra under the direction of the Department’s teachers is the winner of the people’s choice award and a prize holder of the international festival “Musical Academies of Europe” 2013 (Warsaw, Poland).

Competitiveness of students. Every student undertakes internship in the Academy’s opera studio, where they conduct musical performances. The Academy’s symphonic orchestra participates in the state examination in composition, where it plays graduates’ musical compositions. During the state examination the orchestra is conducted by the best students of the Department of Opera and Symphonic Conducting.

Students acquire research skills in the process of research activity of departments, which hold research conferences, seminars on the art of conducting, art studies, musical pedagogy and performance.
