Chemistry in live cells

The consortium Chemistry in live cells is funded by Emerging Fields Initiative of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg since 2017. An interdisciplinary team covering fields of organic chemistry (Mokhir, Schatz, Tsogoeva, Jux), pharmacetical chemistry (Heinrich), physical chemistry (Guldi, Heilemann), theoretical chemistry (Beierlein, Clark) and medicine (Prante) is working since 01.01.2017 on the development of chemical bond-forming reactions (C-O, C-S, C-Se, C-C), which are compatible with live cells. These reactions should lead to formation of either drugs or easily detectable (e.g. fluorescent, radioactive) compounds. The results, which can be obtained in this project, can potentially lead to new treatment methods for diseases like cancer and chronic inflammation as well as to novel diagnostic tools.

BAYHOST

BAYHOST is the Bavarian Academic Center for Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The organization promotes academic exchange between Bavaria and countries in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe including Russia. BAYHOST supports Bavarian universities and universities of applied science through its specific competencies; by supporting their collaboration with academic organizations in our partner countries and by establishing new academic partnerships.

The main objective of BAYHOST is to provide Bavarian universities with expert support in establishing and deepening cooperation with the partner countries of the region. This task is solved by establishing direct contacts; searching for information on existing cooperation in teaching, science and research; granting scholarships for students and graduate students in both target countries and Bavaria; consultations on the possibilities of training, research, and internships.

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

Founded in 1743, FAU has a rich history. It is a strong research university with an international perspective and one of the largest universities in Germany, with 39,780 students, 265 degree programmes, 4,000 academic staff (including over 579 professors), 199.64 million euros third-party funding, and 500 partnerships with universities all over the world. Teaching at the University is closely linked to research and focuses on training students in both theory and practice to enable them to think critically and work independently. The research itself also strikes the perfect balance between a theoretical approach and practical application. FAU’s outstanding research and teaching is reflected in top positions in both national and international rankings, as well as the high amount of DFG funding which its researchers are able to secure.

Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech)

Skoltech is located in the innovation and technology ecosystem Skolkovo near Moscow. It is a private graduate research institute that was established in 2011 in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Skoltech puts particular emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation.

Several Centers for Research, Education and Innovation (CREIs) address Critical Challenges in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, Life Sciences and Biomedicine, Cutting-edge Engineering & Advanced Materials, Energy Efficiency, Quantum Technologies, and Advanced Studies. They are the key building blocks in the effort to develop a graduate university that combines education, research and innovation seamlessly. Skoltech offers master’s programs and PhD programs in English language in these areas. Stipends are available.

Apart from MIT, Moscow State University, Waseda University (Tokyo), Technical University of Munich (TUM) and many other universities and research centers, many companies like Siemens, SAP, Boeing, Microsoft, AstraZeneca, Cisco, IBM and Nokia are among the international partners of Skoltech.

Skoltech is interested in increasing the exchange of students and academics as well as research cooperation with partner institutions in Germany.
