The QS expert highly appreciates Valery Falkov's achievements as Rector of Tyumen State University

January 21, 2020, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin appointed Valery Falkov as Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

Since 2012, Valery Falkov had worked as Rector of Tyumen State University.

According to Zоya Zaitseva, Regional Director of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Tyumen State University is a forward-thinking university which is as attractive as higher education institutions in Moscow.

What distinguishes TSU from many other universities is the young team and a democratic format of the university management. In contrast to many other HEIs, young specialists have an opportunity to influence strategic decisions. TSU is one of the universities that are not afraid of experiments, and, largely thanks to the Rector's efforts and establishing relations with the industry, it has transformed from an average regional university into a rather powerful and influential university, first of all, from the perspective of employers and its graduates.

Explaining why TSU is not included in the world's Top 1000 universities according to QS, Zaitseva noted that the university was still lagging behind in terms of citation index and international awareness, which are important indicators. She assumed that we would see TSU in subject rankings first, and then in the global one. It has a huge potential to enter these rankings.

Talking about future Falkov's endeavors, the QS expert said, "I'd like to believe that this will lead to further development of Russian universities. This is rather a positive impulse for Russian education."

As Zaitseva says, he is the first leader of that caliber who has gone through Project 5-100 and who understands, better than his predecessors, what needs to be done to maintain a historical power of Russian education concurrently with increasing the international prestige and awareness.
