Kazan Federal University and Freiberg Mining Academy will implement the expanded double degree program in 2019
The delegation of Kazan Federal University headed by Danis Nurgaliev, Vice-Rector for Research, Director of the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies, visited Freiberg Mining Academy (FMA, Germany) in order to sign a new double degree program agreement whereunder Master's students of the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies "Stratigraphy of oil and gas bearing basins" will study at FMA for the whole year.
Previously, students participating in this program used to spend one semester in Germany. Starting from 2019, the list of subjects offered at FMA, and German proficiency requirements will be significantly extended.
"The educational program history dates back to the establishment of the research laboratory "Stratigraphy of oil and gas bearing basins" in 2014. This laboratory is a unique platform for the interaction between the scientists from KFU and Freiberg Mining Academy, who became the masterminds of the double degree program", said Vladimir Silantiev, Russian Head of research laboratory, Head of the Department of Palaeontology and Stratigraphy of the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies.
The delegation included Florida Fazlyeva, Deputy Director of the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies for Academic Affairs, and Veronika Zharinova, a graduate of the Master's program, who continues her research at the research laboratory "Stratigraphy of oil and gas bearing basins" The Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies as a junior research fellow:
"I also was lucky to pursue the double degree program "Stratigraphy" between KFU and TU FMA. I spent one semester in Germany and carried out a study of crustaceans in cooperation with Doctor Frank Scholze and Professor Jörg Schneider. Now I am a research fellow at the university and I am pursuing my postgraduate studies. This year in Germany I managed to work with a collection of conchostracans using a state-of-the-art microscope and make a few sketches of shells for further measurements. The program provides invaluable experience in working with world-class scientists".
During the visit the staff of the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies of KFU signed a number of joint research agreements with the Faculty of Tectonophysics and Geothermochronology, the Laboratory of Organic Petrology, the Institute of Drilling and Mining Operations, the Institute of Mineralogy.
The REC of geothermochronology and chemostratigraphy of the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies of KFU is actively working as part of the RF Government grant. German colleagues who have wide experience in this area were impressed by our unique equipment. During the meeting with Director of the Faculty of Tectonophysics and Geothermochronology Professor Lothar Ratschbacher and its staff, a decision was made on collaborative work in this area including research staff exchange", said Danis Nurgaliev.
During the field trip in the neighborhood of Olbernhau-Grünthal the KFU staff got acquainted with field operations areas for students of Freiberg Mining Academy and sampled geological specimens.
Besides, Florida Fazlyeva and Veronika Zharinova visited the International Center where they discussed possible DAAD scholarships for future Master's students.
