The IV Russian-Iranian Forum of Rectors was held in the Islamic Republic of Iran, at the Kish International Campus where languages and economics are taught taking into account the geographic location of Kish Island and its development peculiarities as a free economic zone.
The forum brought together rectors and heads of 13 Iranian and 17 Russian universities including Lomonosov Moscow State University, Saint-Petersburg Polytechnic University, Kazan Federal University, Moscow Pedagogical State University, Mari State University, and others. Viktor Sadovnichiy, Rector of Lomonosov MSU and Chairman of the Russian Union of Rectors, headed the Russian delegation.
At the opening Rector of University of Tehran, Professor Mahmood Nili Ahmadabadi said that annual meetings of the rectors of Russian and Iranian universities confirm that the two countries wish to cooperate.
The goal of the meeting was to strengthen bilateral cooperation and mutual support of the two countries in the development of space, implementation of the international transport corridor «North-South» project, and in the field of medicine and humanities.
The sides discussed future educational opportunities to boost each other’s international standing. Today, 13 Russian and 30 Iranian universities actively maintain partnership relations. Notably, Kazan Federal University cooperates with 12 universities of the Islamic Republic of Iran including the National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Shahid Beheshti University, University of Tabriz, University of Tehran, Tarbiat Modares University, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Sharif University of Technology, and others.
The participants were welcomed by Levan Jagaryan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Hossein Salar Amoli, Deputy Minister for International Scientific Cooperation of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The forum was divided intro three sections where 29 reports were presented.
KFU was represented by Makhmut Ganiev, Director of Naberezhnye Chelny Institute and Yelena Merzon, Director of Yelabuga Institute. Dr. Merzon told about the stages of the university development and academic potential of the two large university branches. Kazan Federal University and the Islamic Republic of Iran have been successfully cooperating based on cultural and religious proximity and academic interest: today, diplomas in practically all fields of study issued by Kazan Federal University are recognized and highly appreciated in Iran. Overall, there are 177 Iranian students at KFU right now. Yelabuga Institute graduated 32 Iranian nationals from its pre-university courses last year so that they could continue their studies at Kazan University, and 6 more students are currently enrolled.
During the negotiations with the representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran particular interest was shown in the university priority programs (environmental oil, biomedicine and pharmacy, oil production, refining and petroleum chemistry, infocommunications and space technologies, new generation teacher training). Kazan University has a wide experience in implementing special programs for foreign students including cultural and educational internships, online courses for learning Russian language, preparation for professional educational programs.
The director noted that the achievements of scientific pedagogical schools of the education institution are confirmed by the results of subject rankings of the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and the British edition Times Higher Education (THE).
Finishing her speech, Dr. Merzon invited the audience to participate in priority projects as part of comparative studies, student research cooperation and organization of student Olympiads and competitions.
Russian and the Islamic Republic of Iran have established diplomatic relations, and the development of cooperation in education and science is a priority.
