Uganda and Russia signed a Memorandum of cooperation in higher education

At the Russia-Africa Economic Forum in Sochi the Memorandum of cooperation in higher education was signed between the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Republic of Uganda and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. The document was signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet of Uganda Sam Kutesa and Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Mikhail Kotyukov.
The Memorandum confirms that the parties are striving to develop and strengthen long-term and rewarding relations in the field of higher education and science. Mikhail Kotyukov noted that Russia was ready to provide assistance to Uganda in developing its scientific potential and workforce capacity for implementing proposed solutions as part of international cooperation in science and education.
Russia-Uganda relations are long-standing and have been actively developing. In particular, the countries are implementing the Academic Initiative for Uganda – the project for testing and using Russian scientific, research and technology and innovative solutions and developments. Research is related to the needs of key sectors of national economy of Uganda, such as agriculture and the mineral resources sector. Russian State Geological Prospecting University named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze and National University of Science and Technology MISiS are involved in the implementation of these projects.
Direct relationships between Ugandian and Russian universities are also being developed. The pilot project in the field of medicine has been implemented by Mbarara University of Science & Technology and Lomonosov Moscow State University. The hardware and software suite intended for remote monitoring of physiological parameters of the population in remote areas without healthcare centers was tested in Uganda.
Another example of interuniversity cooperation is the project for establishing the interuniversity Space Research and Monitoring Center in Uganda with the assistance of HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics.
Besides, bilateral agreements on cooperation in the field of personnel training were signed between Minister of Science, Technologies and Innovations of the Republic of Uganda Elioda Tumwesigye and Rector of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia Vladimir Filippov, and Rector of Russian State Geological Prospecting University named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze Vadim Kosyanov.
