The Parliamentary Committee on Educational Affairs and Culture has drafted a number of amendments that should regulate the situation of Cypriot students studying in the UK, until the conditions for interaction between Cyprus and the UK outside the European Union become clear.
Two amendments are to be introduced – to the Law on Higher Education in Cyprus and to the Law on ensuring the Quality of Education in higher educational institutions. The amendments were drafted by a Parliamentary Committee in collaboration with the Legal Department and the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture. The proposed amendments will be submitted to the President of the Republic of Cyprus and political parties for discussion, the results of which will determine when they can be submitted to the Parliament. The final approval of the amendments by the President may be left to the discretion of the head of state, depending on the development of events around the UK exit from the EU.
Kyriakos Kyriakou-Hadjiyianni, Сhairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Educational Affairs and Culture, told reporters that Brexit would not affect the student exchange program Erasmus plus. Also, the conditions of loans for education, which Cypriots took in British banks, will remain unchanged. However, the conditions for issuing educational loans to EU citizens studying in the UK after Brexit are unclear. Cypriot schools operating in the United Kingdom are in a state of uncertainty too. At the moment, the UK is subsidizing educational institutions of national minorities, but whether it will remain after Brexit is a doubtful question.
