In 2018, the Independent Agency for Accreditation and Rating (IAAR) compiled a ranking list of the best universities of Kazakhstan. The ranking featured Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, L.N.Gumilyov Eurasian National University, M.Auezov South Kazakhstan State University, S.Seifullin Kazakh AgroTechnical University, E.A. Buketov Karaganda State University as well as Karaganda State Technical University, which received the highest scores. The important factor of the competitive advantage of a HEI is its reputation in the national and international education markets. The National Ranking of the Independent Agency for Accreditation and Rating allows universities of Kazakhstan to determine their positions, assess the competitiveness of their educational services, improve their performance, and, most importantly, attract more students and employers.
The ranking of Kazakh HEIs, conducted by the IAAR since 2014, is a list of best Kazakh universities evaluated according to the important criteria:
- concentration of talented students, teachers and researchers;
- student and staff mobility;
- quality of training and employment of graduates;
- high level of interaction between university and employers;
- competitiveness of scientific publications of teachers, doctoral students and graduate students.
It is necessary to mention that the IAAR National Ranking is recognized by the public as a tool to increase the competitiveness of HEIs, contributing to the growth of the export potential of educational services, the main resource that guides students in choosing the future direction of personal development.
It is important to say that the National Ranking of HEIs, conducted by the IAAR, takes into consideration the diversity of educational organizations of the republic and their characteristics. Applications for participation in the IAAR National Ranking were submitted by 75 HEIs of the republic, however, 17 educational organizations were excluded due to incorrect filing. The General Ranking of Kazakhstan – 2018 featured 58 HEIs which included 6 national, 21 state, 7 joint-stock companies and 24 private educational organizations. The result of the digital ranking made it possible to present the following data and inform applicants, parents, employers, the general public and other interested persons through mass media and the IAAR official website:
- Ranking of Kazakh HEIs by Bachelor's programs (by study areas).
- Ranking of Kazakh HEIs by Master's programs
- Ranking of Kazakh HEIs by PhD programs.
General Universities Ranking Top 20, conducted by the IAAR, is determined by summing all the key indicators according to the key ranking criteria. The Top 3 included HEIs which scored the maximum number of indicators for each direction of educational training programs. The following positions are shared by HEIs that have an assessment of their competitiveness level of educational specialist training programs, presented by several HEI-priority areas. Thus, the multi-vector ranking of IAAR, covering various spheres of HEIs' activity, gives a detailed view of the potential, resources and priorities for their further development, and also contributes to the prestige and recognition of educational institutions.
