Russian is one of the most popular foreign languages as students from all over the world have been increasingly choosing Russia as their study destination. Each year TomskPolytechnicUniversity welcomes hundreds of international students as part of double degree and academic exchange programs and internships.

The Institute of International Education and Language Communication of TPU has the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language which continuously improves the Russian language learning system and does its best to provide high quality learning of Russian for international students and undergraduates. Students can refine their skills either with teachers' help or independently using textbooks, audio and video materials and computer programs.
The Institute offers a wide range of Russian language courses:

- Short-term intensive Russian language courses for everybody who wants to improve their language skills from elementary to advanced levels in general or special major.

- Russian Language for Mobility for international students and for those who would like to pursue joint Master's degree programs and academic mobility programs.

- Long-term Russian language courses for international exchange students and for those who would like to get Russian Language State Certificate. They include a preparatory course, Bachelor's courses, Master's courses and Special disciplines (philological type).

TSU offers international students to pass the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL) to get Russian Language State Certificate. This test opens doors to getting education in Russian: the TORFL evaluates the language competence level required for admission to Russian HEIs. The test system is as follows:

ELT (Elementary Level Test)

BLT (Basic Level Test)

TORFL-1 required for admission to Russian HEIs

TORFL-2 required for obtaining Bachelor's/Master's degree upon graduation from Russian HEIs (excluding a degree in Linguistics).

TORFL-3 required for obtaining Bachelor's degree in Linguistics upon graduation from Russian HEIs

TORFL-4 required for obtaining Master's degree in Linguistics upon graduation from Russian HEIs

Tomsk  Polytechnic  University also invites foreign students over 18 years old to join the Russian Language and Culture Summer School "Siberian Holidays".

The school is intended for those who are interested in or are already learning Russian language and culture, planning to deepen their knowledge or start learning from scratch.

The school organizers have the following tasks:

  • to immerse learners in the Russian language environment,
  • to show real pragmatic socio-cultural situations and comment on them,
  • to increase learner’s internal motivation for Russian language practice,
  • to create psychological comfort,
  • to demonstrate Russian national traditions and mentality peculiarities,
  • to develop cross-cultural communication skills.

The school offers the following:

  • Effective and fascinating study of Russian in a comfortable and cozy atmosphere;

Author’s programs allow the students to learn about culture, literature and history of Russia (Siberia in particular); get acquainted with Russian folklore; visit the «Siberian Athens» student town; learn about life in Siberia.
