Programme presentation. The study programme “Philosophy” acquaints students with the spiritual legacy of the greatest sophists of Russia and all mankind, forms a theoretical basis for research activity and practical skills in teaching philosophy and social sciences. The additional specialization “Social Management” prepares students for solving professional tasks in various spheres of social management.

The Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences maintains scientific contacts with the Institute of Philosophy of Belorussia, philosophers from Germany and France. The Department regularly invites leading teachers from the Institute of Philosophy of the RussianAcademy of Sciences, the faculties of philosophy of Moscow and St. PetersburgUniversities for presenting scientific reports and lecturing.

Teaching staff. The Department’s teaching staff consists of experienced teachers (professors V. Kondratyev, S. Kocherov, T. Kulikova, A. Fyodorov, V. Fortunatova) and young PhDs (E. Kuchinov, N. Smelyova). A. Fyodorov is a laureate of the federal project “Personnel Reserve – Professional Team of the Country”; V. Fortunatova is awarded the title “Honored Worker of Culture of Nizhny Novgorod Region”, S. Kocherov is a laureate of Nizhny Novgorod award.

The Department holds the national symposium “Future of Philosophy”. Some teachers’ works are funded by RF grants in Humanities and by MunsterUniversity’ grants.

Competitiveness of students. The average passing grade of the applicants in 2014 was 195. The students of the Department actively participate in conferences and symposiums. During the last few years, 7 students have taken top places in regional competitions of students’ research work. Every year a number of students win the University (V. Rosanov) or regional (Minin and Pozharsky) scholarships.

Interaction with employers. Major employers of the Faculty’s students are leading HEIs of Nizhny Novgorod region: Nizhny NovgorodStateUniversity, Nizhny NovgorodStateMedicalAcademy, M.ˇ Glinka Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatoire, and others. Some professors of philosophy departments of Nizhny NovgorodStateUniversity take part in the academic process and research activity of the Department; they also willingly admit the Department’s graduates for postgraduate study.
